About Cat Expeditions

Cat Expeditions has been leading ethical wildlife photography tours across the globe, specializing exclusively in wild cats, since 2020. Our mission is to offer once-in-a-lifetime experiences photographing elusive and iconic feline species while prioritizing animal welfare, responsible tourism, and having direct conservation impact.

We partner with world-class local guides, conservation organizations, and small lodges to create immersive, small-group trips grounded in science, ethics, and respect for wildlife.

Highlights:

  • 14+ guided, ethical wild cat photography tours offered yearly
  • Offering tours for 19 different wild cat species
  • Over $35,000 donated directly to conservation partners to date

Tours & Focus

Cat Expeditions specializes in wild cat photography experiences on five continents. Many of our trips target species rarely seen, and are often the only photo tour provider for that particular wild cat.

Representative tours include:

Pumas of Patagonia — mountain lions near the famous Torres del Paine National Park

Manul of Mongolia — intimate encounters with Pallas’s cats on the steppe

Jaguars of the Pantanal — Brazil’s riverine big cats

Cats of Borneo — including Sunda clouded leopard, marbled cat, and bay cat

Iberian Lynx of Spain — one of the world’s great conservation success stories

Tigers of India — tracking Bengal tigers across ancient forests

Eurasian Lynx in Estonia — finding Europe's largest wild cat

Bobcats of California — local North American carnivore photography

Across all tours, we emphasize ethical wildlife viewing — no baiting, no crowding, minimizing disturbance by understanding cat behavior, and careful adherence to local guidelines.

Founders & Lead Guides

Sebastian Kennerknecht — Co-Founder & Wild Cat Photography Expert

Sebastian is a wildlife and conservation photographer who has spent more than fifteen years documenting wild cats around the world. He has photographed more wild cat species (34 out of the 40) than anyone else, including many that are rarely seen or seldom documented.

His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, BBC Wildlife, Smithsonian, The Economist, Science, and other international outlets.

Sebastian holds a degree in Ecology and Evolution from UC Santa Cruz and is an Associate Fellow with the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP).

At Cat Expeditions, he works closely with Rachel to design and lead many of the company’s trips, using his deep knowledge of cat behavior to craft itineraries that balance ethics, photography, and conservation impact.

Sebastian and Rachel are also currently on a mission to become the first people to photograph all forty species of wild cat, through their project, Chasing Cats!

Rachel Tobias — Co-Founder & Guest Experience Director

Rachel is a wildlife photographer and logistics expert who ensures every expedition runs smoothly from start to finish. With extensive global field experience, she leads tours, supports guests with hands-on photography guidance, and oversees pre-trip and post-trip communication.

Her work centers on creating a warm, well-organized, and memorable guest experience while upholding the company’s strict ethical standards.

Expedition Leaders and Local Guides

Cat Expeditions partners with a small, highly experienced team of regional experts, trackers, and local guides. Their deep knowledge of wildlife behavior, landscapes, and culture ensures safe, ethical, and exceptional encounters for every guest.
